“Save ze Ta Ta’z” Event Raises Breast Health Awareness

The first annual Zonta Club of Lafayette Art Bra Event “Save ze Ta Ta’z” gala was held at River Oaks on Monday October 26th.  The Martin Family Band provided lively music, Kate Mundy, KATC TV 3 news anchor served as emcee and Representative Fred Mills was the auctioneer as well as the premier sponsor.

Remember when a woman's "unmentionables" were modestly hung to dry on an inside clothesline, out of sight? Times have changed and “Save ze TaTa’z” brought those bras out of the closet.  It’s a little shocking, but it makes people stand back and look at what is kept secret --- the awful “C” word:  Cancer.

The contest was for artists and non-artists who constructed three-dimensional art bras from a great variety of materials.  Art bras are one of a kind, touching and often humorous; some are stitched, glued, pasted, wired, crafted, sewed and otherwise invented.

The event was a runway hit, with many amazing art bras created by local artists, including survivors, celebrities, friends and family of survivors.  A select group of bras was modeled for the live auction and the remaining were offered in the silent auction.

All funds raised will benefit local women with 50% dedicated to the Institute for Breast Health, Inc., a nonprofit 501 c 3 organization whose mission is to provide state of the art education concerning breast health as well as celebration of breast cancer survivorship for the community known as the Acadiana Region. The club retained the remaining 50% of the proceeds for local service projects.

An unusual event, the Zonta Club of Lafayette Art Bra Event “Save ze TaTa’z” brought a new way to raise awareness of women's health and the importance of an annual breast exam.  Plans are in the works for next year’s event with sponsorships already secured.
