Zonta Club of Lafayette Faith House

    Zonta Club of Lafayette has provided assistance to Faith House (a local battered women's shelter) with time, gifts and monies for  sixteen years.
 
 
    Ditty Bags - cloth bags with toiletries and personal items for the women and children.
 
 
   
    Zonta Club of Lafayette has adopted a room at Faith House, The Yellow Rose Room and will maintain its upkeep.  
         
  Zonta Club of Lafayette Women’s Health Issues Breast Health Symposium
 
 
    Since 1993, the Zonta Club of Lafayette, the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, and the Oncology Nurses from the local hospitals conduct a Breast Health Symposium to raise the awareness of breast cancer and to honor breast cancer survivors.
 
 
    The Breast Health Symposium is held in October each year with speakers and booths presenting the latest information on breast health, prevention and research; and a Style Show is held to featuring and honoring breast cancer survivors  
         
  Zonta Club of Lafayette Lafayette Parish Fire Prevention Week Essay Contest
 
 
   
Since 1983 Zonta Club of Lafayette and the Lafayette Consolidated Government Fire Departments have worked together on the Lafayette Parish Fire Prevention Week Project
 
 
    To educate the public, especially children on fire safety in our communities; To promote literacy through an essay contest at parish schools; To provide these services to help save lives and property.
 
 
    Since  1986 the Zonta Club of Lafayette has provided an 8-page coloring book for the fire station tours and fire education classes.  
         
    Since 1997 the Zonta Club of Lafayette has sponsored an Essay Contest for 4th through 8th grades. The Fire Departments sponsor the Poster Contest for Kindergarten through 3rd grades.  
         
    During the years since  the 1997 awards, the Zonta Club of   Lafayette  and several sponsors have donated funds to defray the cost of the T-shirt Awards.
 
 
     

 

T-shirts are awarded to the overall and 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners of the Poster and Essay Contests and to several of the Fire Prevention Bureau workers.
 
 
     

 

The front of the T-shirts sport  Lafayette beneath it while the back has the Zonta International logo along with the various T-shirt sponsors’ names or logos.
 
 
    10,000 posters were distributed by the fire department to the schools of Lafayette parish.  Students submitted approximately 630 posters for the Poster Contests.
 
 
    120 essays were submitted to the fire department for the Zonta Club of Lafayette Essay Contest.
 
 
    Over 1000 children and adults were in attendance at the awards ceremony at the Cajun Dome on October 12, 2003 at 1:30 p.m.

    Volunteer Instructors Teaching Adults (VITA)
 
 
    Reach Out And Read - This Louisiana State University State System Hospitals program allows doctors in pediatric clinics to "prescribe" books for parents to read to their children.  The books are given permanently to the parents and children, and the Lafayette club replenishes the supply on a regular basis.
